Augustinians of the 19th Century in Brno: Considerations on Beauty and Art

During the 19th Century, Augustinian monastery at Old Brno represented the scientific and cultural heart of Moravian rebirth. The best-known authority of the phenomenon is Mendel, but also his less known brethren as poet Klácel, composer Křížkovský or journalist Šilinger, have to be mentioned in the same breath.

The goal of the course is to introduce into social ideas of fine art in general. Four lectures on relations among Art, Politics and social justice. Some important figures are presented: e.g. Marx, Lorenzetti, Rowlandson, Goya, Courbet, Picasso, Rivera, Zhdanov. Their importance in terms of social and/or political comment as well as the social and historical context of their production is discussed.
